Writer’s block – what is that?

Writer's Block Almost every blog about blogging that I have read till date talks about how to combat the Writer’s block. Well, I thought that I really need to add my two bits.

First of all, you need to answer this question: “Why do you blog?” If your answer is something along the lines of “I blog because I like to and I do it for me and I don’t care who is reading”, then you are probably okay. You don’t need to worry about the so called “writer’s block”; because you will be writing whenever something comes to your mind and it doesn’t matter to you if you post daily/weekly or not.

However, if your answer is that you blog to an audience and you would like to build-up a regular reader base (so that you can eventually monetize all that hard work), then you need to worry about it, yes. Because unless you are extremely gifted and you every once in a while you come up with posts which are must reads for everyone, chances are that you will have very few readers unless you write regularly and write good stuff every so often.

So, how do you do it? Well I have only two suggestions:

  1. Don’t stop writing. Never take a break. I have noticed that when I write a lot of posts, I keep getting ideas for new posts. It’s addictive. I love to write it seems. A lot of this writing might not be so enticing for everyone, but then again, it might be. Anyway, you are bound to come up with some really good stuff during this stream of continuous writing.
  2. Note down your ideas. Whenever I am writing, I get other ideas to write about. I quickly jot down the idea. Whenever I am surfing the web, I get ideas. Heck I get ideas when I am driving. I make sure to remember as many of these ideas as I can and I write them down in a central place. This becomes something like my repository of ideas from where I can pull one whenever I feel like writing.

So, you should just follow the above two guidelines and they will feed themselves. This way you will always have something to write. Of course, you can ask your friends to help out by adding to your repository of ideas.
