Today is Environment day in the Blogosphere
Today is the day. The 15th of October. The day where we all talk about the environment. My blog is personal, so anything I put on it is my opinion. And today I am going to be opinionated about the planet, ecology, environmentalism, nature. Who was it who said:
“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”
I think it is an old native American saying. If people hundreds of years before us knew this, why don’t we? We are putting the planet to ruins just like our parents did before us, and theirs before them. Every single day… every single day you hear, read, talk, argue, discuss about some issue related to the environment. It’s all over the TV. But what are you doing about it? Have you switched the lighting in your house from incandescent to more environmentally friendly options? Do you even know why that light bulb is not so environmentally friendly? Do you care?
I have been reading about the acute water shortage that my city is going through. The ground water level has been declining rapidly over the last decade and we are fast moving to becoming a completely barren landscape. Do you know that we can actually do something to help this? It’s called rain water harvesting. However, it is much more than just digging up a hole to let rain water seep into the ground. How many of us are aware of this?
While I am at it, have we been thinking about the effects that global warming is having over the polar ice caps. Or the way the rain forests are disappearing off the planet. Or how the great barrier reef is dying. What about the endangered species on the planet or the ones that are becoming extinct everyday. Do you know the impact an extinct species can have on us humans? Are you aware of what can be done to help? Are you aware what as an individual you can do?
On this day, when all Bloggers unite to talk about the Environment, let’s ask ourselves these questions and try to find answers to as many of them as we can. If we find answers then maybe we will act upon them; and if we do, we may yet save the planet and leave our children a beautiful gift rather than a horrible curse.
