To iPhone or Not To iPhone
The Apple iPhone is out and it looks like it might be available in India soon enough. Now, I continue to be wowed by the gadget and it’s really cool. I would love to get one and the first thing that my wife said is to wait for the next generation. I am probably going to follow her advice. Two of the people whose blogs I read have differing opinions and I can relate with both (and I am going to choose the side which keeps my money with me). Jeff Atwood has a long post about “Why You Don’t Want an iPhone – Yet“; and Scott Hanselman has a short and sweet “Why You Deeply Want an iPhone – NOW” – which is basically the main reason for buying an iPhone, because it’s cool.
I guess I will wait because of these reasons:
- In India, WiFi spots are really far and few in between (and they are not blazing fast either).
- 3G will eventually find its way and become available for the masses. Having an EDGE phone in that era will really feel sucky.
- I drop my phone about once a day (it’s an old Nokia 9300 Communicator), and the iPhone looks like a delicate instrument. My Nokia can stand any kind of abuse (my dog sometimes plays with it).
- Not sure if I want to change my mobile service provider in case iPhone is tied to a specific provider like in the US.
I guess, it’s going to be a wait and watch game for me.
