Syndicate your blog by ‘burning’ a feed

So, you have a blog. It probably has a feed (since most blogging engines have in-built support for generating feeds). Which format is your feed in: Atom or RSS or something else? How many of your readers use a reader which only supports one format? How many of your readers care?

Well, first of all if you are not sure what a feed is and why should you have one, visit this excellent introduction at Feedburner.com: Feed 101. Once you have an idea about what a feed is, the next step is to provide a consistent, error free, implementation free, feed to your readers. This is where FeedBurner (now acquired by Google) comes in. Feedburner takes the native feed from your blog and cleanses it. It then provides a feed for your blog which can be used in any Feed Reader software (even in a browser). Why should you do that? Well, the detailed answer is here, but the short one is this:

  • Better Feed Quality for your readers.
  • Automatic notifications to directories when you update your blog.
  • Management of traffic Spikes.
  • Statistical data about your feed (How many users? Where from? etc.).
  • And much more (even a potential source of revenue)

So, don’t wait, and go ahead and burn your feed at FeedBurner.com
