Stop Comment Spam using WordPress
I love Akismet for battling comment spam. But ever so often, Akismet also slips up. Now, you can help Akismet by tweaking some settings in your WordPress settings and further reduce your comments spam.
There are two ways you can do this, both involve using your WordPress Admin Panel. Go to Options, and then go to the Discussion sub menu. It is towards the bottom of this page where you can do your magic. There are two sections called Comment Moderation and Comment Blacklist. Below is a screen shot of my settings for these sections:
As you can see, I have asked WordPress to put any comment with 2 or more links into moderation. The second thing I have done is that I have added a blacklist filter for “mail.ru”. I noticed that most of my comment spam that Akismet missed were from some mail.ru email id. Now anything from that domain will automatically get marked as Spam. You can also add further filters to control Spam based on the type of Spam you are getting.
This made my life much easier (of course, these days, I hardly get any spam, thanks to Google).

Hello Mircea,
I had evaluated this as an option for my blog, but the only drawback of this plugin is for users who don’t have Javascript or Cookies enabled, they can’t post comments. I would rather keep some work on my side rather than have users inconvenienced in any way.
Of course, its easy for me to say because I don’t get a large amount of comments anyway.

Ironically, I love spam! Thanks to Akismet. I love to see that ‘Spam Blocked’ number rising all the time
