SLS to reduce illiteracy in India
Recently as I was going through Google.org (the philanthropic arm of Google), I noticed that they have made a grant to PlanetRead (nice of them). PlanetRead was founded by Dr. Brij Kothari and among other things is involved in producing SLS programs and music videos for the Indian audience. From a post by Dr. Kothari on Google Blog: “More than 500 million people in India have access to TV and 40 percent of these viewers have low literacy skills and are poor. Through PlanetRead’s approach, over 200 million early-literates in India are getting weekly reading practice from Same Language Subtitling (SLS) using TV.” (read here)
SLS stands for Same-Language-Subtitling. More details can be found at the PlanetRead website here.
