Slips of Tongues
Well, I did come across (thanks to Wikipedia) some really funny examples of Spoonerisms from the original Spooner himself. For those of you who didn’t know:
“Spoonerism is a play on words in which corresponding consonants, vowels, or morphemes are switched. It is named after William Spooner, who was notorious for this tendency”.
Here are some really funny ones from Mr. Spooner himself:
- The Lord is a shoving leopard (instead of The Lord is a ‘loving shepherd’)
- You have hissed my mystery lectures (instead of You have ‘missed by history’ lectures)
- You’ll soon be had as a matter of course (he said this to a lady, where he meant You’ll soon be ‘mad as a Hatter’, of course)
- Let us raise our glassed to the queer old Dean (instead of ‘dear old queen’)
- A half-warmed fish (instead of ‘half-formed wish’)
- Is the bean dizzy? (instead of ‘dean busy’)
- Go and shake a tower (instead of ‘take a shower’)
- A well-boiled icicle (instead of ‘well-oiled bicycle’)
And many more are there. Just Google it and you will find many by him and others.
I get a lot of slips of tongue unconsciously. It goes up sometimes (where I am having a few a day), and it comes down where I don’t get any for many days.
Share your funny slips in comments if you like.
