Productivity Tip for those who use their desktops
I am a heavily desktop oriented guy. I put all my icons on my desktop. I like to be able to find everything quickly by using my desktop. To others, my desktop is 1920×1200 sized garbage can. To me, it’s my life blood.
Of course, when you look at it like this, you can’t help but agree that it does look like a mess. But, to me it’s an organized mess. I can simply click the desktop and type the first few letters of whatever I am looking for and press enter. My desktop serves as a repository for my current activities; it is a moving window of documents, folders, shortcuts, that I am using in a 6-8 week window. But, it does look messy. So, I decided to hide all the icons.
This does look much cleaner, doesn’t it? And it doesn’t draw any comments from anyone who sees it. However, I lose out on the utility of keeping all those things on my desktop. Or so I thought, till I discovered by accident that my typing the first few letters of a document, folder, etc. and pressing enter still works. Great. However, there is only ONE little trick. To make it work, you need to press Windows Key + D (which brings the Desktop ‘Window’ to focus) and then type out whatever you need and press enter.
For example, to open my downloads folder (which I keep on the desktop and is called downloads), I press Windows Key + D, followed by typing ‘down’ and pressing enter. This opens my Downloads folder.
