Open Source Media Player
I came across VLC Media Player while reading the Life Hacker blog. I subsequently downloaded it and gave it a try. My first impressions are good and bad. I only installed the player (you can also install plug-ins for the browser) and opted to not change any file associations, yet after installation ALL my media files were now associated to this player. This was VERY irritating. On the other hand, it played a divx that a friend had shared out of the box without requiring any additional codec (I must add that my latest Windows Media Player and iTunes were unable to do that). Also, it is very light weight and loads really fast.
The website is here and the download here.

Hi,
I have had the VLC Media Player since long and for the specific reason that you dont need to download specific codecs for watching videos.
Since I have an older version, I did not face any problems in the associations of my files. It might be the bug in the latest release. Anyways, I am not trying it
