Music is like Red Bull

I should probably call this post: “How to stay awake?”

Today (or tonight) was one of those days when I was burning the midnight oil because of some urgent work. Although, in the past this hasn’t been a big deal but as I am getting older, its harder to stay up the night. Sometime during the night, I really felt the need for a Red Bull. My energy reserves were dwindling, and I had had enough Pepsi (cans strewed throughout my room) – and making coffee takes too much effort.

So, I needed my Red Bull. Well, inspiration struck, and I started my iTunes. And as luck would have it (actually, it was my playlist) it started playing some songs that I really like one after the another. This is when I discovered:

Music is like Red Bull. And I kid you not. I was wide awake, full of energy, cranking out work one after another. I wasn’t even listening to it on a very high volume. Just half way through what my laptop can churn out.

Stopping every few minutes to sing out one of the lines very loudly (woke up my wife in the next to the next room).

The effect of this thing is so potent that even after my work is done, I still can’t sleep (hence the post at this ungodly hour – its almost 5 in the morning, and I haven’t slept all night). Well, I doubt that I will get much sleep tonight, or maybe I will. I should try turning the music off.

In any case, next time I need to stay awake, it won’t be a Red Bull (aren’t those harmful to your body anyway – not that staying awake like this is very healthy). As I was saying, the next time you need to stay awake for some reason, just crank out the music from your favorite jukebox.

  1. I hate the taste of red bull. Find it very hard to intake. And music: For one, most of us do not have luxury to play music in night and secondly, when music plays, my mind wanders, my attention is hardly on what is being played :( I guess I have to depend on coffee to keep me awake.

  3. Music keeps me awake at night. Especially the songs I like.
Especially if you can sing a bit and spend the tired moments singing a song.

  4. @Poonam – if you don’t like the taste of regular red bull, then I suggest that you should never try to have Red Bull Cola (I tried it last week, and it was horrible).

@Anshul – Or a bit of wine, right?

@Katya – Yup, you got it. That’s what happened to me.

  5. Never gone beyond coffee. :)
Well, songs don’t have that much effect on me when I am really sleepy. I can sleep through a song!

  6. @Amit – I think I should have put a disclaimer about the types of songs as well. :)

  7. I couldn’t agree with you more. Music is the best for programming. I mostly do electronica, for programming and housework.

  8. Of course much depends on the type of music. When I’m tired and need some energy I put on some dance music, and I’m good to go!

  9. @KD – most definitely true. You can’t expect to have a slow and soothing type of song to wake you up :)

Its got to be something peppy that you want to sing along with. :)
