Google has a new favicon
I noticed this yesterday (and maybe the day before as well) and dismissed it as some problem with my browser. Since i am running a pre-release version of FireFox, this wasn’t a far-fetched thought. But today, again I saw that all Google sites are displaying a different Favicon.
Looking at the icons to the left, you can see the before and after. The one to the left is the old icon, while the one to the right is the new one. It is a more humble icon as compared to the old one, in my opinion.
What is Google trying to say here? Is it more open (as compared to the closed box in the previous icon) now? Recently Google announced that it is going to make the Google Gears project completely public by removing Google from it and calling it only Gears. Is this what this favicon represents as well – a conscious move towards letting everyone know that Google is a humble, open entity?
Anyway, all that is trash. The fact: Google changed it’s favicon. The opinion: I liked the one earlier more.
Update: Google has finally acknowledged this change on their blog. Head over there to read their reasons for changing (I still don’t like the new icon).
