Gmail marking Google Emails as Spam

I use Google Alerts a lot. I also have always been very happy with the spam filtering that I get with Gmail. However, as a matter of habit, every once in a while (once a week), I take a quick look at what Gmail has marked as spam.

While taking one of these quick peeks today, I found one of my Google Alert email lying there. Now, I am surprised. Why would Google mark as spam an email generated from its own service, configured by me. Because their filter thought so, I guess.

But then I would call this a failure for Google Alerts. I did not get an alert when I should have.

Or, is the spam filter so smart that it is marking the content described in the alert as Spam? If yes, that is also pretty dumb, because I would like to be the judge of that.
