Gmail Labs… let’s wait and see

imageDo you remember Google Labs? Well, now there is Gmail Labs. Volumes have been written on how Google is lagging behind on innovation when it comes to Gmail. While this is not a major innovative move, it’s a step in the right direction. To access Gmail Labs, simply go to your settings page after logging into Gmail. There is a new link there which opens the lab page. This page has a bunch of features which you can turn on/off for your Gmail account.

Although there is not a whole lot of super features there as yet, here are two which I have started using already:

imageSuperStars – Basically adding more stars to the tool set for you to mark your messages with. Look at the image on the right. Notice all the different stars (there are more available).

Hide Unread Counts – This is the other feature I am using. Notice in the image there are no unread counts in against the folders (even though there is plenty of unread email). Now I don’t need to use this filter anymore to hide my spam counts.

There are many others which you can turn on (including a game, mouse gestures, signature tweaks, random signatures, quick links, custom date formats, etc.) I think it would be safe to assume that there will be many more added in the near future. Because overall none of the existing ones are a great new feature.

Let’s wait and see.
