Genetics and where we are going with it
I have recently finished reading an excellent book by
Michael Crichton called “Next”. It’s about the crazy world of genetics and what are the various things happening around the world using the newly discovered techniques and exploring a yet unexplored territory. As usual, it is hard to tell fact from fiction in this novel.
Anyway, a personal coincidence took place. I came across this article about how there is a real life example of Human Speciation present with us since 1951. Speciation is defined by the Wiki as the evolutionary process by which new biological species arise. This is the link to the article (the link might not work at the moment because it was made popular on Digg and the site has been overwhelmed. However, you can Google the link and look at the cached version of the story). After reading the article and then reflecting back on the novel, I suddenly have a sense of dread.
If even half the things mentioned in the book are happening around the world, then we are in for some troubled times. A lot of the concepts presented go totally against my personal thoughts about self-preservation; and the possibility of these being real leave me a little disturbed.
Anyway, the book is nice to read, so I recommend it. But do read the article as well.
