Fixing IE7 once and for all

imageA while back, I wrote about the steps I took to speed up a really slow IE7 installation that I had on my laptop. Although I use Firefox most of the time (though I am not very happy with that these days), I do need to use Internet Explorer every so often (there are certain sites which won’t work on Firefox, believe it or not).

Anyway, even after I got my IE7 to speed up after a while, I still encountered a few issues, the two main ones being:

  • Images rendered on any web page would look as if they were low-resolution versions. I kept thinking that it had something to do with my Desktop settings somehow.
  • Some web pages (such as my banking site) would always give me a JavaScript error. I always thought that it was a problem with the bank site till I saw that my wife doesn’t get that error when she opens the same site on her Internet Explorer.

Well, it turns out that I didn’t know what was causing the problems, but I found the cure:

Thanks to Mr. Geek’s excellent post about this topic, I discovered that there is a Reset button for Internet Explorer. To reach it, go to Tools->Internet Options->Advanced. You should see a screen like this:

IE7-Options

Notice that highlighted button? Well, that is the magic button. Just click it and your woes are gone. Of course, do read the fine print. All your add-ons are disabled, all your settings are reset, and so on. For me that was a small price to pay. No more annoying JavaScript errors and the images now show as they should.

For the add-ons, I turn them on one-by-one as I need them.

  2. @Sayan, you better watch out. I was very happy with Beta 4, but Beta 5 has been a nightmare…. crashes, high CPU usage, general mess up of my computer, slower response on certain features (such as the smart zooming)…

    I hate it… can’t wait for a release which fixes these issues…
