Blogging for Money

Somehow, I keep running into the topic of Make Money Blogging. I might as well open up a blog like the million others that are out there which tell about ways to make money. Except that I should probably talk about all the things that you can do and still not make anything by blogging (my story is that I blog because I like to and if I make any Adsense money, then nice). Anyway, this post is about all my limited knowledge about Blogging for Money.

One can make money blogging by several ways:

  1. Advertisements – Almost everyone can sign up for a Google AdSense account and start displaying ads next to their blog content. You get paid if any site visitors click on these ads or if there are enough site visitors you may get paid by simply displaying them. There is also the Yahoo! Publisher Network, if you are a US Citizen. Then again, if you are a successful blogger with a lot of traffic, then you may try your luck at Tribal Fusion or TextLinkAds. These sites are a little choosier about who can server their ads (most of us are not in that category). Of course, if you are extremely popular, you may get advertisers asking you directly if they can advertise on your site.
  2. Pay Per Post – Because blogs are becoming more and more a part of people’s daily intake of information, a lot of pay for posting activity is coming along. More and more blogs have sponsored reviews. Here are a few sites which offer this kind of service: PayPerPost.Com, SponsoredReviews.com, and ReviewMe.com (I think they probably all belong to the same network). All of these sites allow you to choose from a list of available reviews you can do. This allows the blogger to choose topics which are of interest to the blogger anyway. Also, most of these reviews do not necessarily require you to give a positive review. I have tried out all three and so far I have done one Sponsored Review through ReviewMe.com.
  3. Community Content Generation – this is for those who love to create content. There are sites cropping up on the internet which allow users to join up and start writing content for them. It’s like blogging but not on your blog. You get paid for submitting content (sometimes) and also get a cut on the ad revenue generated by your content on these sites. Two such sites are Helium.com and AssociatedContent.com. Both of these at this time work only for US residents. AssociatedContent lets you submit content however doesn’t pay you. Helium doesn’t let you do anything if you are from outside US.

Well, these are of course not even the tip of the Blog Money iceberg. I shall keep trying itsy-bitsy things till I can get enough money out of this blog to pay for the hosting.

Important Update: Everyone who is even remotely thinking of monetizing their blog should check out Jeff Atwood’s take at Coding Horror.

  4. Thanks Flora for the link. The list is good. I might be tempted to sign up with some of them…

  5. From what I understand, to make real money you have to be generating real traffic (about 10,000) visitors a month.

I’m like you, I blog because I enjoy it. But it sure would be nice if someone would pay me well for what I enjoy so much ;).

  6. Hi Kathryn,

Yes, that’s true… to get real money you need loads of visitors… but I have been able to pay for my hosting and little more with my blog.

    :)
