Blogging Basics – FavIcon and TrackBacks

Well, I recently moved to a different hosting service, and didn’t manage to bring over my blog properly from my previous host. In the process, I also lost my favicon and today I decided to put it back on the blog.

For those who don’t know what a FavIcon is (I didn’t know till not too long ago), it is an icon that is shown next to the URL in the browser or on the tab if you use a tab-enabled browser. Try navigating to www.google.com to see what I mean. Anyway, to get such an icon for your blog, all you need to do is create an icon and name it favicon.ico and then place it in the root directory of your blog. The browser will automatically pull it from there to display next to the URL or on the tab (or next to bookmarks or saved links).

Coincidentally, Scott Hanselman, also blogged about his favicon today. You may want to take a tip from his post about what to watch out while designing your favicon.

I also decided to start using TrackBacks on my blog from today. This post will contain the first trackback from my blog to the post mentioned in the previous paragraph. Now a trackback is a way through which my blog notifies Scott’s blog that I have linked to it (at least that is what I understand of it). Tom Coates has a post on TrackBacks for Newbies on his blog (admittedly, I am in this category).
