Akismet – The Spam Buster

I used to get between 10-100 comments in a day on my blog. And they were almost always all spam. These comments would be anything from Viagra ads to people talking about their website/blog. Since I installed Akismet it has stopped around 9000 spam comments and occasionally I do check the comments marked as Spam, and Akismet is always bang on target (not sure if that would be the case if I got a lot of comments). Anyway, every so often (about 5 times a week), I still get comments which are spam and are missed by Akismet. It is because of these comments that I still have turned on moderation on my blog.

However, I am thinking that starting today, I will turn off moderation. The way I see it, the max a spam comment can stay on my blog is a few hours as I check my blog 3-5 times a day. The moment I see it I will mark it as Spam and Akismet won’t make the same mistake again.

Akismet learns from the data we submit to it by marking comments as Spam or not Spam. This is why it is one of the best anti-spam plugins out there. Here are some stats as of now from the Akismet stats page:

Ham is the total number of valid comments. So, if you are not already using it, install Akismet now.
