9 surefire tips to get traffic to your site for new bloggers

There are literally thousands of posts around this topic; and they all offer splendid advice. However, a lot of such advice only makes sense after you have crossed a certain threshold in terms of readership and content. Even then, it is pretty hard to get people to visit you on a regular basis.

Here is a list that I have put together that mentions techniques that I have used a lot to get people to at least visit my blog. Of course, it is the content that would get them to come back.

Here we go:

  1. Digg - Digg every post that you write. This is critical. Every time you digg a post, it gets at least 5 visits. This is a minimum even if you don’t get any digg other than yours. Such is the power of Digg. (I don’t digg all my posts, but that is because I am a little conservative (lazy?)).
  2. Stumble - StumbleUpon is your best friend. I stumble up each one of my permalinks. With the mass appeal of StumbleUpon, you increase the chances of someone stumbling to your site with every time you add something to the StumbleUpon database.
  3. Other Such Sites - Submit your articles on every other such sites that you can. I mention Digg and StumbleUpon separately because I think they are two of the most influential ones. However, go ahead and submit articles on other places such as ClipMarks, Reddit, Furl, Fark, etc. You are sure to get some traffic every time you submit to these places.
  4. Market your post – 1 - Join community blogging sites such as myLot (there are many others out there). myLot has a number of discussion groups. See if there are any discussions going on which are relevant to the topic of your post, if yes, participate in the discussion and point users to your post. If there are none, then consider starting a new discussion around the topic of your post and refer to your posts. If your posts are really helpful, you will start building a reputation and find it easier to convince people to come to your blog.
  5. Market your post – 2 - After you put together a post, go to Technorati. Search there for the topic on which you just made a post. You will receive a list of blogs which have posted on the same topic recently. Visit these blogs and see if your post adds value to their posts, and leave a link to your posts in the comments if it does. People reading the post may decide to follow the link to your blog.
  6. Blog Carnival – 1 - Participate in a Blog Carnival. Submit your posts to people hosting blog carnivals on similar topics as your post. When the carnival goes online, people will find their way to your blog through the link you get in the blog carnival.
  7. Blog Carnival – 2 - Host a Blog Carnival. Hosting works in a similar way. Bloggers will submit posts to a blog carnival and you can choose to link to them. You get visitors because of the carnival listing, as well as because some bloggers may choose to link back to you if you include their posts in the carnival.
  8. Social Networks - Make sure that you mention the name and URL of your blog in the profile page of every social network that you are part of. It does help.
  9. Analysis - Have Google Analytics tracking code installed in your blog to analyze the traffic trends to measure the effectiveness of each of your techniques. It allows you to see data based on referrer. For example, you will be able to measure how much of your traffic comes from Digg versus Google.

If any of you neo-bloggers get positive results from this, please let me know. Also, if you can’t get it to work, let everyone know.

  1. Hi, I’m San from Mylot.
I like your blog, and your style of writing.
Will you exchange links with me?
    My blog is http://freestuffonly.blogspot.com

  2. I love Digg + Stumbleupon, it drives many traffic for new blogs, if you use them well !!!

  3. They do work for me… But of course, not nearly as well as they can.. :D

  4. Interesting points but I have to say I stronly disagree with digging every post. Getting 5 visits may be nice… but getting to the front page brings 10s of thousands and will never be achieved by digging every post. That just makes your digg account look like a spammer account and so your posts will only get a few diggs at the most.

  5. Hi Matt,

Actually you are right. If you see, I don’t digg every post that I write, only those that I think might be worth reading for a wider audience.

This tip is for very new bloggers. This keeps the morale up as there is some traffic (however fleeting). You could use a dummy account to digg them.

Disclaimer: Of course, this tip is against the very spirit of Digg.

But yes, I agree with Matt’s comment about the long term negative effects of this tip.

  6. Hi all!

    Very interesting information! Thanks!

    Bye
