3 Reasons for why RSSBandit is not worth it

I have been using RSSBandit for 5-6 months now. And there always have been problems, but I was sticking out with it. Today, however I finally found the time to look for another reader. But before I tell you what I have switched over to, let me tell you why:

  • RSSBandit uses too much memory. I have 20-25 feeds configured and repeatedly I have RSSBandit consuming up to 400 megabytes of memory after a couple of hours of operation.
  • RSSBandit is too slow to startup. I have it configured as one of my startup programs and it really slows things down (even though I reboot very rarely, it’s still a pain).
  • RSSBandit really slows down if there are too many items under a feed. For example, whenever I click on my Engadget feed, it freezes.

Well, these are enough reasons to move on from RSSBandit and start looking for an alternative. And the alternative I chose was Omea Reader. First up, here is a screenshot of memory usage. Below, I have just started both RSSBandit and Omea Reader, with the same number of feeds configured, and look at the difference between the memory consumption:

I would imagine that this glaring difference alone should get me to move. But the startup time of Omea Reader is less than 1/4th of RSSBandit. And, I have not seen a situation where Omea has hanged on me.

The only niggle with Omea is (or I haven’t been able to figure it out yet) is that the close button closes the application, instead of minimizing it to the system tray.

  1. I used RSSBandit for a long time too before switching to Feeddemon. I’ve tried Omea Reader off and on in between and have a hard time in deciding on which one to keep. So now i’m trying out both Feeddemon and Omea side by side to see which one is better. I have yet to find a desktop RSS reader with all the necessary features in one app. Sounds like a perfect idea for a side hobbyist project. Now if i just had some free time…….

  2. Well Vineet, the only reason I don’t use FeedDemon is the money that you have to pay to use it.

Omea suits almost all my needs (so far). I normally have 2-3 Visual Studio IDE windows open, and combine them with Outlook 2007 and a never closing FireFox, the memory occupied by RSS Bandit really used to hurt.
